FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University baseball team (14-7, 2-2 RRAC) earned a Red River Athletic Conference victory 5-1 over LSU-Shreveport (12-5, 3-1 RRAC) at LaGrave Field on Friday.
The Rams broke a scoreless tie in the third inning starting with a
Joel Rickman single that deflected off the pitcher’s glove for an infield hit.
Jake Davis smoked a liner into shallow right center to put runners at the corners. Davis stole second to put two in scoring position. LSU-S pitcher Rory Young committed a balk to give the Rams a 1-0 lead.
As expected, the Pilots and Rams played a very tight contest, with not many opportunities to start a rally. The first four innings boasted a pitcher’s duel with Young and
Derek Vaughn using all of the plate to keep runners off base
The Rams made a run in the fifth inning with back to back singles from Rickman and
Dusty Harper to put runners at the corners with no outs.
Trevor Moon came through in a big spot with a RBI single through the left side to extend the lead 2-0. David Kiriakos loaded the bases with a slap shot line drive into right field, and
Charles Tabone hit a drive deep to center field for a sacrifice fly and a 3-0 Wesleyan lead.
Brian White stayed red hot with a two RBI single straight up the middle for a 5-0 cushion heading to the sixth inning.
The Pilots got a run back in sixth inning with a Zack LeJeune RBI single into shallow center field to make it a 5-1 contest.
LSU-Shreveport threatened in the eighth inning after a K.J. Semien reached base after being hit for third time in the ball game. Kade Billeaudeaux singled into left field to put a runner in scoring position with only one out, but nothing doing as the Rams shut down the Pilots in the ninth as well to seal the 5-1 win.
Vaughn (2-1) got the win in six innings pitched. Vaughn allowed one run on two hits with four walks and four strikeouts.
The Rams will end the series with the Pilots in a double header tomorrow starting at noon. The two teams will play a seven inning contest followed by a nine inning game at LaGrave Field.
