ROCKFORD, IL: The Texas Wesleyan University table tennis dynasty is alive and well. The Rams took their tenth consecutive Coed Team National Championship on Sunday. In addition, the Lady Rams won their fifth national title in the last seven years.
Since the program's inception in 2001, the Rams have won 53 national championships including all 10 Coed Team Titles for which they have been eligible to play.
This year the Rams won four of the six titles decided:
Emil Santos won in men's singles while
Sara Hazinski and
Claudia Lie Ikeizumi took the women's doubles title. Meanwhile, the Rams finished as the runners up in men's doubles and in women's singles, Hazinski was defeated by the eventual champ in the semifinal round.
"I am extremely proud of our athletes and their four national championships," commented head coach Jasna Rather. "Honestly, if I was dreaming, it would not end as well as it did. The competition was so strong this year. Our athletes had to fight so hard for Texas Wesleyan and their team spirit helped them get these great results."
In the coed team competition, the Rams breezed through the quarterfinals and semifinals without dropping a match to Ottawa and San Jose State University. The final pitted the top-seeded Rams against the second seed, Mississippi College. The match was tied 1-1, but the Rams took the next two contests to win 3-1.
"We just made history by winning our tenth consecutive national championship in the coed team event," Rather said. "Of course this is great for our table tennis program, Texas Wesleyan Athletics, and especially our student-athletes who worked so hard to win each of these championships."
In the women's team event, the third seeded Lady Rams had their hands full. Texas Wesleyan took narrow 3-2 wins over Rutgers and NYU in the quarter and semifinal rounds before meeting second seeded Ottawa with the title on the line. This time the Lady Rams prevailed 3-1.
