MONTGOMERY, AL: The Texas Wesleyan University baseball team (42-16) punched their ticket to the championship game of the NAIA Baseball National Championship Opening Round by downing top ranked Faulkner University 4-2 in 10 innings (48-11) at Harrison Field on Friday.
The Eagles got an early lead with a two run first inning. Sergio Sanchez provided a RBI single through the left side. David Bishop followed with a RBI single to shallow center for a 2-0 lead
Texas Wesleyan got a run back in the third after Trevor Moon doubled to left center. David Kiriakos moved the runner to third on a sacrifice bunt, and a Wild Pitch gave the speedy Moon plenty of time to make it a 2-1 game.
The Rams tied the game in the fifth inning after Moon picked up his second hit of the ball game with an infield single to short that the speedster beat out. Faulkner made two errors in one play that allowed Moon to zoom to home plate and score to tie the game up. Sanchez bobbled the ball to force a hurried throw resulting in an error, and after that Bishop threw away the ball trying to get it back to the infield to allow the tying run to cross the plate.
The two teams battled through the last four innings scoreless and went into extra innings. The Eagles got two quick outs and looked like they get out of the inning, but Jake Howeth drew a walk to put the winning run on base. Henry Yates in the next at bat produced the biggest hits of his Wesleyan career, sending a ball deep to left field for a two run home run to put Wesleyan up 4-2.
Patrick Stanley finished off the Eagles to get to 3-0 on the season tossing two scoreless innings on only one hit. Cory Bafidis pitched brilliantly, and really controlled the game after the first inning. He tossed eight dominant innings on two runs and two hits, with three walks and six strikeouts.
With the win, the Rams break the Eagles 10 game winning streak and will take on the winner of Faulkner and the winner of the Indiana Tech vs. Georgetown game tomorrow at 7:30 pm at Harrison Field.
