FORT WORTH, TX: The Wesleyan World Series got underway at Sycamore Park on Monday.
Kelly Shoppach's Gold team took the first step toward securing the golden horns with a 7-0 victory in game one of the best of three series.
The Wesleyan World Series is Texas Wesleyan Baseball's annual fall inter-squad series.
The Gold team was paced by senior Aidan Laurini who went 2-for-4 with 2 doubles, and 2 RBI. Senior Julio Ibarra also went 2-for-4 with 2 RBI. Newcomer Ryan Breaud (2-for-3) and junior transfer John Grimsley (2-for-4 with a run scored) excelled as well.
Senior transfer Ryan Williams earned the win, working 5.2 shutout innings.
Robert Garza's Navy team was paced by junior C.J. Ateek who went 1-for-3 at the plate. Redshirt freshman Hunter Porter was also 1-for-3, while junior
Chandler Schoelkopf was 1-for-2 with a walk
Junior transfer Cameron Vige took the loss.
With anticipated rain this afternoon, today's scheduled 2 p.m. start has been moved to a doubleheader on Wednesday starting at 1:30 p.m. at Sycamore Park.
The Rams are coming off a tremendous season that culminated with an overall record of 47-15 and an appearance in the NAIA National Tournament Opening Round. The team will begin the 2018 season when they host Bethany College (KS) in a three-game series February 3-4.
