Robert Garza enters his tenth season (2027) as head baseball coach at Texas Wesleyan University after leading the Rams to a 286-132 overall record during his tenure. Garza originally joined the program as an assistant coach in 2015 and served four seasons on staff before being named interim head coach for the final 39 games of the 2018 season. Following that successful run, he was appointed as the 8th head coach in program's history.
Since taking over the program, Garza has established Texas Wesleyan as one of the premier baseball programs in the Sooner Athletic Conference (SAC) and the NAIA. His teams have captured multiple conference championships, earned multiple NAIA National Championship Opening Round appearances, and produced numerous professional baseball players.
Under Garza's leadership, the Rams have compiled an extensive list of accomplishments that include them being three-time regular-season champions of the Sooner Athletic Conference (2019, 2023, 2026) as well as reaching the NAIA National Tournament three times (2019, 2023, 2026). Garza ranks second in program history with 286 victories with a .682 winning percentage, he's also a two-time Sooner Athletic Conference Coach of the Year (2023 & 2026). Garza has not only coached some outstanding teams, but he's coached some outstanding players to receive national recognition. Kiki Menendez (2018) was recognized as the NAIA National Player of the Year, with both him and Rody Garcia (2024) being the only two Rams to receive the ABCA-Rawlings NAIA Gold Glove. Garza has also coached three Sooner Athletic Conference Player's of the Year in Kiki Menenedez (2018), Greyson Barrett (2023), and Brendon Vela (2026). The Rams have named 49 athletes to a Sooner Athletic Conference All-Conference Team. Garza not only has been strong on the field, but also in the classroom as the Rams have named 31 students to the NAIA All-American Scholar Athlete list.
Garza's first full season as head coach in 2019 was one of the best in school history. The Rams finished 46-16, earning a NAIA National Championship Opening Round berth, recorded the third most victories in program history, and set a new school record with 521 strikeouts as a pitching staff.
Following the shortened COVID-19 season in 2020 and managing through a restricted 2021, Garza continued to elevate the program with winning seasons. The Rams finished at or near the top in the SAC during the 2021-2024 seasons. In 2023, Texas Wesleyan baseball captured the Sooner Athletic Conference Regular Season Championship finishing 36-13; and Garza was named The Denney Crabaugh Sooner Athletic Conference Coach of the Year recipient in its first year named after the legendary coach.
In the summer of 2025, the John L. Smith Foundation tabbed Garza as their inaugural manager for the Boy of Summer Baseball club’s expedition throughout Europe. Garza’s commitment to developing well-rounded student-athletes continues to 2026 as he joins select members of the program participated in a second historic baseball tour of Europe, providing a unique international experience beyond the field.
In 2026, the Rams finished atop of the SAC standings. The Rams finished with a 42-12 overall record, ranked in NAIA Baseball Top 25 Poll, SAC Regular Season Champions, SAC Tournament Runner Up, and secured a spot in the NAIA National Championship Opening Round tournament. Garza also garnered The Denney Crabaugh Sooner Athletic Conference Coach of the Year Award for the second time.
Throughout his tenure, Garza has built a team first environment centered on player development, academic success, and competitive excellence.
Before arriving at Texas Wesleyan, Garza spent eight seasons as the Assistant Head Baseball Coach and Recruiting Coordinator at Northwood University (Texas), where he helped guide the program to a #3 national ranking, an appearance in the Avista NAIA World Series, and multiple conference championships. Garza started his college coaching career at Dallas Baptist University in 2005.
A native of Texas City, Texas, Garza is a graduate of Texas City High School. He played catcher at Dallas Baptist University after competing in both baseball and football at Tyler Junior College.
Garza and his wife Stephanie, along with their daughter, Hattie, reside in Cedar Hill, Texas.
