FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University volleyball team took a 3-0 (25-21, 25-15, and 25-20) loss to the fifth ranked University of Texas-Brownsville Scorpions on “Dig Pink” night at the Sid Richardson Center Thursday night.
In the first set the Lady Rams battled with the Lady Scorpions, as Wesleyan held the lead until a Lady Ram error gave UTB an 8-7 lead. The Lady Scorpions kept Texas Wesleyan at bay and took a close 25-21 first set win.
In the second set, the Lady Scorpions dominated the net for most of the game. UTB jumped out to a 16-6 lead, but the Lady Rams made a 7-2 run that that brought them back within four points at 17-13. Wesleyan could not overcome the deficit and took a 25-15 second set loss.
The third set proved to be the closest, despite the Lady Scorpions bursting out to a 5-0 lead. The Lady Rams regrouped and two straight kills by Kristen Venhuizen tied the game at eight apiece. UTB wouldn’t give Wesleyan the lead easily as the Lady Rams evened the game six times before taking an 18-17 lead from the Lady Scorpions. UTB overpowered the Lady Rams though, and took a 25-20 third set and 3-0 match win.
“We played well at times”, commented head coach Christy Clawson, “we gave up some easy points that turned into runs and that hurt us. We know what to work on when we see [UTB] at the conference tournament. UTB is a good team, but they’re beatable. Now we need to move on and get ready for SAGU and Our Lady of the Lake.”
Evoni Darling led the Rams with 17 assists and 11 digs. Venhuizen notched eight kills, and Marissa Rangel tallied 11 digs in the loss.
In honor of breast cancer awareness, the Lady Rams hosted “Dig Pink” night, holding a silent auction and selling goods to raise money for the fight against breast cancer. The Texas Wesleyan volleyball program raised over $600 for the cause.
The Lady Rams travel to Waxahachie, TX, to take on Southwestern Assemblies of God University on October 26. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. in SAGU's Full Life Center.
