Lady Rams Nip Lady Eagles

FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University women’s basketball team (8-1) picked up an impressive win against Oklahoma Christian University (5-5) 69-52, by dominating the second half on Saturday at the Sid Richardson Center.

 

The Lady Rams won the tip-off to start the game, and a defensive battle ensued throughout the first half. Both teams played tight defense, as the game went scoreless for nearly the first two minutes. A good free throw shot by Brittany White finally put the Lady Rams on the board followed by a jumper from Tiffany Adair that gave Wesleyan a 3-0 lead. The Lady Eagles stomped out to an 8-0 run to take a 8-3 lead with 14:22 left in the half. Oklahoma Christian led by as many as nine and kept the lead until the Lady Rams tied the game at 21 with a Kristi Alexander free throw with 6:14 left. The Lady Eagles would not give up the lead easily and Wesleyan did not take it until an Ashley Bringol layup gave the Lady Rams a 29-27 lead with 2:18 left before the break. Wesleyan narrowed out a 33-32 lead going into halftime.

 

The Lady Rams barely outshot the Lady Eagles from the floor, 44.4% to 43.5%. Oklahoma Christian edged the Lady Rams with 33.3% percent from the three line and 71.4% from the free throw line, while the Lady Rams shot only 28.6% from behind the arc and 53.8% from the charity stripe.

 

The Lady Rams took complete control in the second half, going on an 8-0 run to start the half. The more astonishing stat is that the Lady Ram defense held the Lady Eagles scoreless until Andee Wayne put in a layup with 13:56 remaining in the game to score the first points of the second half for Oklahoma Christian. The Lady Rams led by as many as 19 and kept the pressure on the entire half, scoring 19 points off 15 Lady Eagle turnovers. The Lady Rams control led them to the 69-52 win.

 

The Lady Rams shot 31% from the floor in the second half and 37.5% for the contest, while Oklahoma Christian only shot 18.8% in the second half and 33.3% for the game. The Lady Eagles went 0-6 from behind the arc in the second half. Wesleyan shot 88.9% from the free throw line in the second half and 74.2% for the game, while the Lady Eagles shot 66.7% in the second half and 68.6% for the game.

 

White led the Lady Rams with a double-double scoring 13 points and 10 rebounds. Alexander tacked on 13 points for the Rams, and Eliana Mijangos posted 12 points in the win.

 

Texas Wesleyan tries to extend the home win streak to four as they take on Oklahoma Wesleyan on Monday, December 13. Game time for that contest is set for 6:00 p.m.
