FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University volleyball team (4-3) picked a pair of wins in day two of the fourth annual Wesleyan-Hughes Classic taking a match from Loyola New Orleans (2-3) in four sets (25-10, 25-20, 16-25, 25-23) before downing Mid-America Christian (3-2) in four sets (25-17, 25-19, 19-25, 25-13) on Saturday.
Wesleyan dominated the first set by forcing Loyola into errors. Kristen Venhuizen started the match strong, throwing down four kills in route to a 25-10 set one win. The Lady Wolfpack showed some resilience in set two, taking a short 18-17 lead with a kill from Kailey Tuthill, but key kills from Hannah Horton and Haelee Horne turned the second set in Wesleyan’s favor and the Lady Rams won 25-20. The third set proved how tough the Lady Wolfpack were, as they took control after a few Lady Ram mishaps and won game three 25-16. The Lady Rams fell behind early and were down as many as six points in the fourth set, but the determined squad chipped away at the Loyola lead and finally a kill by Venhuizen gave Wesleyan a 23-22 lead. The Lady Rams would go on to win 25-23 and take the match in four.
Horne led the Lady Rams against Loyola with 13 kills, eight digs, and two block assists. Evoni Darling posted an impressive 42 assists to go along with 12 digs, and five block assists in the match. Venhuizen notched seven kills and 11 digs, while Katherine Rosenbush had nine kills, and three block assists in the win.
In the first set against Mid-America Christian, the Lady Rams came out hot, controlling the game with some solid hitting from Katherine Rosenbush who tallied seven kills on eight attempts with no errors. Wesleyan took game one 25-17. The Evangels matched Wesleyan’s tempo in set two, never trailing by more than four (15-11) and cutting it a one point set at 19-18. However the Lady Rams blasted their way to a 25-19 game two win with more help from the dominating Rosenbush. In set three, Mid-America Christian was led by Chris Smith, who took charge and changed the momentum of the game with solid hitting. She tallied six kills and with some late errors charged to Wesleyan, the Evangels got one back 25-19. The Lady Rams made adjustments for set four and charged through the Evangels with solid defense and great hitting to take the match with a 25-13 fourth set win.
Rosenbush led all players with 16 kills in the match. She also had four block assists and three service aces. Venhuizen racked 13 kills, 14 digs, and two aces. Horne added 12 kills in the match. Darling posted a spectacular 49 assists in the win.
In other second day action, Mid-America Christian sneaked by Loyola in five sets (25-22, 22-25, 20-25, 25-22, 15-9), UT-Brownsville (3-0) downed Brenau (0-5) in three sets (25-8, 25-8, 25-16), Mid America got past SAGU (1-2) in five sets (25-21, 20-25, 25-16, 18-25, 15-5), and SAGU beat Brenau in five sets (25-20, 27-29, 18-25, 25-22, 15-7.
The Lady Rams are back in action at home on September 1, as they take on the University of Texas at Dallas in the Sid Richardson Center at 7:00 p.m.
