PLAINVIEW, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University women’s soccer team (2-0) took a 4-2 win at Wayland Baptist University (0-1) on Monday.
Jessica Watton stayed hot up front for the Lady Rams, getting the scoring started in the 15th minute on an assist from Katie Fruit. Wayland Baptist stormed back with goals from Corita Kraemer (32nd min.) and Najuka Anderson (35th min.) to lead 2-1 at the break.
In the second half, it was Watton again, this time unassisted, tying the game in the 53rd minute. Jacqueline Wittman netted the game-winner in the 65th minute off assists from Watton and Fruit. Watton and Fruit capped the scoring in the 86th minute, with Fruit knocking in her first collegiate goal on the pass from Watton.
The Rams outshot the Pioneers 25-15 and 11-8 in shots on goal. #Katy Houchin# made six saves while improving to 2-0 in net for Texas Wesleyan. Watton finished with two goals for the second straight game. She has racked up 10 points on four goals and two assists in the two outings.
In spite of the final score, head coach Josh Gibbs was not pleased with an otherwise lackluster performance. “I am very disappointed with the way we came out today,” Gibbs said. “Wayland came to play, and we looked like we were not ready. I take responsibility for that and guarantee it will be better on Saturday.”
The Lady Rams open their home season on Saturday, when they host Ouachita Baptist University. That game is scheduled for a 12:00 p.m. start at Martin Field.
