FORT WORTH, TX:  The Texas Wesleyan University men’s soccer team (0-6) staged a stunning comeback before falling 3-2 against Lubbock Christian University (4-0-1) in double overtime on Saturday.

The Rams came out sluggishly on an oppressively hot afternoon.  LCU’s Tony Valera scored the game’s first goal just over six minutes in.  Still it appeared that the Rams were going to limit the damage to a one goal deficit at the break.  However, TWU was whistled for a foul with three seconds showing on the clock and Tristan Long hammered home the Chaps second goal.

The Rams came out of the break showing some life, and their effort paid off in the 59th minute when Ivan Kovacevic scored an unassisted goal.  Later, in the 72nd minute, Ryan Johnson scored his first goal of the season when he headed a cross from Tyler Mendez into the back of the net.

In the 83rd minute the Rams were called for a foul just inside the box, but Dustin Jones’ penalty kick hit the left post.  Just over a minute later Dominick Gutierrez made a terrific save on a shot from Aaron Tiemann.  A Chap forward was there to put the rebound in, but was called offside and the goal waved off.  Kovacevic had a good look in the 88th minute, but LCU’s Alistair Caldwell was there to save the shot from the near left wing.

The teams battled to a draw through the first overtime, but, in the 107th minute, Jones broke away from the Rams’ back line and scored the game winner on an assist from Long.

The game was remarkably close statistically.  LCU led 26-23 in shots and 7-6 in corner kicks.  Gutierrez made 11 saves in the loss, while Caldwell came up with 12 stops in the win.

The Rams’ scheduled game with University of Science and Arts on Tuesday has been cancelled.  They will return to action on Tuesday, September 21, when they travel to Kerrville, TX, to take on Schreiner University.  That game is scheduled for a 5:00 p.m. start.
