Saints Topple Rams in Five

Box Score

SAN ANTONIO, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University volleyball team (7-8, 1-1 RRAC) lost a hard fought five-set match at Our Lady of the Lake University (4-1, 2-1) on Thursday. The Saints won with scores of 23-25, 26-24, 24-26, 25-20, and 15-17.

The last time these two teams met, OLLU took a five-set win in the Red River Athletic Conference Tournament. Thursday’s game was even more hotly contested, but the Saints still prevailed by the same score.

The Saints took an early lead in game one and held off a Lady Ram comeback for the 25-23 win. Games two and three could not be decided in the regulation 25 points with each team taking a 26-24 win. Trailing two games to one, the Rams came through with a 25-20 win in game four. The Rams came out strong and took an early lead in game five, but could not close out the match. OLLU came from behind to take a 17-15 clinching win.

Kristen Venhuizen posted a solid all around game with 12 kills and 20 digs. Haelee Horne finished with 14 kills, while Katherine Rosenbush had 13 kills and seven blocks. Evoni Darling racked up 47 assists.

“Our seniors played well and showed great leadership and poise,” commented head coach Christy Clawson. “We had opportunities to win, but could not capitalize on them.”

The Rams will return to action on Friday, in UT-Brownsville’s Scorpion Invitational. Texas Wesleyan will face sixth ranked UT-Brownsville in an RRAC match at 3:00 p.m. and eighth ranked Columbia College in a non-conference tilt at 5:00 p.m.
