SHREVEPORT, LA: The Texas Wesleyan University women’s basketball team (13-2, 5-2 RRAC) took a 68-64 win at LSU-Shreveport (6-7, 3-4) in Red River Athletic Conference Action on Monday.
Midway through the first half, Texas Wesleyan used a 12-0 run capped by a three from
Shayla Moore to grab the advantage at 28-12. The Pilots chipped away at the deficit and cut the score to 32-24 with a three from Tynekqua Warren with 2:01 on the clock. LSUS closed the period with a jumper in the paint from Najarae Wiley and trailed 36-29 at the intermission.
The Rams forced 17 turnovers in the first half, which they converted into 17 points.
LSUS continued to chip away in the second half and tied the game at 45 with a layup from Simone Brewer with 10:04 on the clock. The Pilots took a 49-47 lead two minutes later, but Texas Wesleyan answered with a jumper from Moore and a triple from Ashley Bringol.
The Rams were maintaining a six-point lead, 56-50, with just under three minutes to play, when Sharday Cotton scored for LSUS and was fouled. Cotton missed the free throw, but LSUS got the offensive board and scored to cut the score to 56-54.
On Texas Wesleyan’s next possession,
Brittany White drained a three. White then knocked down a pair of free throws with 1:28 to play that all but put the game out of reach at 61-54.
The Rams attempted just 15 free throws in the game, but went 9-for-10 at the line in the final two minutes to put the game away.
The Rams outshot the Pilots 47%-39% from the field and 35%-18% from long range. LSUS dominated the glass, 46-28, but the Pilots were hampered by 27 turnovers that led to 26 Texas Wesleyan points.
Moore led the Rams with 15 points, while White finished with 14.
Tiffany Adair added 11 points to the win.
Cotton posted a double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds for LSUS.
The Lady Rams will return to action on Saturday, when they travel to Muskogee, OK, to take on Bacone College. That game is scheduled for a 5:30 p.m. start.
