Lady Rams Down Warriors, 63-53

MUSKOGEE, OK: The Texas Wesleyan University women’s basketball team (14-2, 6-2 RRAC) took a 63-53 win at Bacone College (12-3, 6-3) in Red River Athletic Conference action n Saturday.
 
The Lady Rams started slowly, as Bacone led 13-5 out of the gate. Texas Wesleyan then ripped off an 11-2 run to take their first lead, 16-15, with 8:34 to play in the first half.    The game rolled through eight more lead changes before Eliana Mijangos nailed a pair of three-pointers to put the Rams ahead 30-26, with 2:15 on the clock. Texas Wesleyan led by the same margin, 34-30, at the intermission.
 
The Rams shot 43% in the first half, including 5-of-8 (63%) from beyond the arc.
 
The Rams grabbed control of the game at the start of the second half, starting the period with 12 unanswered points. Noelani Gi finally broke the silence for Bacone with a three-pointer nearly five minutes into the period.
 
The Warriors made a run midway through the second half, closing to within five on a free throw from Michelle Simmons with 10:23 to play. The Rams answered with a 5-0 mini-run and kept Bacone at arm’s length for the remainder of the contest on their way to the 63-53 win.
 
For the game, the Rams outshot the Warriors 39.3%-32.8% from the field, 50% (7-14)-30% (9-30) from distance, and 75%-60% at the free throw line. The Rams led 41-36 in rebounding. Although the Warriors turned the ball over only one more time than the Rams, Texas Wesleyan scored 23 points off of turnovers while Bacone managed just 10.
 
Brittany White led all scorers with 16 points. Rachelle Franklin earned her first start of the season and responded with 13 points and nine rebounds. Mijangos finished with nine points while hitting 3-of-6 from long range.
 
Gi led the Warriors with 15 points, while Kevelle Harmon added 12.
 
The Lady Rams will return to action on Monday, when they travel to Langston, OK, to take on Langston University. That game is scheduled for a 5:30 p.m. start.
