Lady Rams Falter at Wiley

MARSHALL, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University women’s basketball team (12-2, 4-2 RRAC) suffered an 83-66 setback at Wiley College (5-8, 2-4) on Saturday.
 
The Lady Rams struggled out of the gate, while the Wildcats were red-hot. Wiley ripped off a 16-4 run over a five-minute period that gave them a healthy 38-18 advantage. Wiley led by as many as 23 points on their way to a 45-25 halftime lead.
 
Wiley shot 62.5% from the field including 85.7% (6-of-7) from distance. Brittany Smith-Banks, Jamey Ellis, and Gabrielle Duffy each scored 12 points in the period. Smith-Banks and Ellis combined to go a perfect 6-for-6 from downtown.
 
Texas Wesleyan shot 44% in the second half, but could do little to slow Wiley in the second half, as the Wildcats continued to fire at a 61.1% clip from the field.
 
The Rams cut the deficit to 16 (51-35) with a three from Eliana Mijangos, but Wiley pushed ahead by as many as 27 (74-47) on their way to the 83-66 win.
 
Rachelle Franklin paced the Texas Wesleyan effort with 12 points, while Mijangos finished with 11. Octavia Mullins posted nine points and 10 rebounds.
 
Smith-Banks and Ellis finished with a game-high 19 points each.
 
The Lady Rams will return to action on Monday, when they travel to Shreveport, LA, where they will take on LSU-Shreveport in RRAC competition. That game is scheduled for a 5:30 p.m. start.
