HOUSTON, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University men’s soccer team (7-5-2, 4-2-1 RRAC) suffered a 2-1 loss at the University of St. Thomas (5-6-1, 5-3) in Red River Athletic Conference action on Saturday.
The game was a tale of two halves, with a strong first 45 from St. Thomas carrying the day. The Rams controlled the second half, but could not overcome a 2-0 deficit.
UST struck almost immediately, catching the Rams on their heels and knocking in the game’s first goal in the first minute. The Celts added another strike fifteen minutes later.
Midway through the second half,
Ivan Kovacevic got the Rams on the board when his free kick found the back of the net. The goal put Kovacevic back into a tie for the conference lead with an even dozen on the season, but The Rams were unable to find the equalizer and fell 2-1.
For the game, both teams took five shots and three corner kicks, while the Celts held a slight 4-3 edge in shots on goal. The Celts were whistled for 17 fouls, while the Rams were stopped 12 times. UST was called offside 4 times, while the Rams jumped ahead three times.
The Rams will return to action on Thursday, when they host Southwestern Assemblies of God University. That game is scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. start at Martin Field.
