FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University men’s soccer team improved to 8-5-2 and 5-2-1 in Red River Athletic Conference play with a win over Southwestern Assemblies of God (5-7-4, 3-4-2 RRAC) at Martin Field on Thursday night.
In a first half filled with an unordinary number of fouls and five cautions, the Rams found a way to take an early lead on a Christian Sotelo goal in the 2nd minute played by Javier Padilla.
Both teams continued to battle intensely, with the Rams edging possession over the Lions. Ivan Kovacevic gave Wesleyan some breathing room with a laser in the net played from TJ Romaguera in the 39th minute, and the Rams took a 2-0 lead into half time.
The second half proved to be more of the same as the referee was determined to keep a tight match even though the Lions and Rams vigorously battled for the ball.
A SAGU penalty committed in the box in the 67th minute set up a penalty kick. Javier Padilla set up for the kick and sent the ball sailing to the back of the net for a 3-0 Ram lead.
The Lions simply had no answer for Texas Welseyan as the full time horn sounded to seal the 3-0 victory.
Southwestern Assemblies of God had their chances, but Dejan Milosevic (8-5-2) was there to work the shutout with seven saves in the match.
Fouls were 25 for SAGU and 15 for Welseyan. The Lions took 17 shots, seven on goal, to the Rams 14 shots, with five on goal.
Texas Wesleyan continues their home stand with a match against Huston-TIllotson University on Saturday, October 22. Game time set for a 7:30 p.m. start.
