HOBBS, NM: The Texas Wesleyan University women’s soccer team (15-3, 7-2 RRAC) closed the regular season with a 2-0 win at the University of the Southwest (4-8-1, 2-6-1) on Saturday. With the win, the Rams set a program record with their 15th win of the season while advancing their single-season shutout record to an even dozen.
Lady Rams soccer is in its 13th season. The 2005 and 2009 team both won 14 games. Three regular season losses is also the lowest total in program history.
The Lady Rams rode two early goals to victory on Saturday.
Karissa Olson got the scoring started with her seventh strike of the season in the 9th minute. Five minutes later,
Whitney Chappell scored her fourth goal of the season. From that point, Texas Wesleyan struggled to create opportunities.
The Lady Rams controlled the ball to the tune of nine corner kicks, but managed only ten shots in the game and put just four of those on target. However, the defensive line allowed the Mustangs only two shots, and
Aubree Gallego stopped both of those to preserve the shutout.
Head coach Josh Gibbs was displeased with his team’s effort. “This was the worst way to break such a great record,” Gibbs said. “I’m very disappointed going into the conference tournament to have played like this, but hopefully we are not done yet and we will add to that record with a better performance.”
At 7-2 in conference play, the Rams will be the third seed in the RRAC Tournament. They will host a quarterfinal game on Saturday, November 5, against sixth seeded Bacone College. That game is scheduled for a 7:00 p.m. start. The Lady Rams will also host the semifinal and final rounds of the tournament at Martin Field, November 11-12.
