CEDAR HILL, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University women’s soccer team (11-3, 3-2 RRAC) got a 2-0 conference win against rival Northwood University (1-2, 1-2 RRAC) at Knight Field on Thursday.
The two teams could not find a groove in the first half, jockeying for procession for most of the half. Fouls were aplenty and in the 17th minute Northwood’s Heather Mathison was called for a yellow for a bad challenge on Karissa Olson.
Northwood attempted some shots on goal early, but Aubree Gallego was there to control them. The Lady Rams had a few opportunities as well; taking eight first half shots, but to no avail. The score remained deadlocked in a ni-nil tie going into the break.
The Lady Rams were on the ball in the second half, putting the first goal of the game in at the 52nd minute mark with a Kayla Mason header from Paige Wheaton off of a free kick just outside the right side of the box.
The Lady Knights continued to play rougher than the referee preferred as Katie Knapp was called for a yellow in the 63rd minute, and Audrey Gatlin picked up a yellow in the 67th minute.
Jessica Watton gave the Lady Rams an insurance goal in the 83rd minute with a goal from inside the box from Allison Walsh.
Northwood had no answer for the Texas Wesleyan as the final whistle blew to give the Lady Rams a 2-0 win.
“It was a pretty rough game,” head coach Josh Gibbs commented. “I was very pleased with how our girls kept their composure and stayed focused on the task at hand. I thought we were the better team, and got the win we needed to get back on track.”
Gallego (11-3) had eight saves in the win. Northwood’s Cristin Keilker (1-2) got five saves in the match.
Northwood took 16 shots to Wesleyan’s 15 shots. The Lady Knights were called for 24 fouls with four yellow cards, while Texas Wesleyan had 14 fouls with one caution.
The Lady Rams will travel to Shreveport, LA to take on LSU-Shreveport on Saturday, October 8. Game time for that match is scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. start.
