Lady Rams Breeze By Bulldogs

HAWKINS, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University women’s basketball team (25-4, 17-4 RRAC) picked up a 64-53 conference win against Jarvis Christian College (9-17, 5-16 RRAC) on Saturday.

 

The game was tight throughout most of the first half with the Lady Rams keeping a slight edge over the Lady Bulldogs. Wesleyan went on a 7-0 run midway through the first half to secure a 16-10 lead. Jarvis fought back and tied the game at 16-16 with 5:38 left. Nicole Terral and the Lady Rams kept the pressure on with a three ball to make it 19-16 Texas Wesleyan. The Lady Rams went on an 8-3 run to end the half, extending the lead to a 27-18 Lady Ram advantage at the break.

 

Wesleyan shot 40.0% from the floor in the first half, while Jarvis only shot 24.0%. The Lady Rams outscored The Lady Bulldogs in the paint 16-4, bench points 13-4, and second chance points 6-0 largely due to Octavia Mullins posting 11 first half rebounds.

 

Jarvis Christian started the second half with a quick 7-2 run to tie the game at 29-29. The Lady Bulldogs stole the lead with a three pointer from Dinilesizwe Love that put Jarvis up 35-34 with 15:42 left in the game. Texas Wesleyan came storming back and took a 41-37 lead with a jumper from behind the arc by Brittany White. It was all Lady Rams from there as the Lady Bulldogs nipped at the lead here and there, but did not have enough to make a comeback, and Wesleyan picked up the 64-53 win.

 

In the second half, Jarvis Christian shot 41.9% from the floor in the second half, 40.0% from downtown, and 50.0% from the free throw line. Texas Wesleyan shot 39.3% from the floor, 57.1% from the three point line, and 73.3% from the charity line in the second half.

 

For the game the Lady Rams shot 39.7% from the floor, 31.3% from the three point line, and 72.2% from the free throw line. The Lady Bulldogs shot 33.9% from the floor, 35.0% from downtown, and 50.0% from the charity stripe.

 

White led the Lady Rams with 17 points, adding eight boards in the win. Terral picked up 10 points and five rebounds. Rachelle Franklin finished with nine points, six boards, four steals, and three assists for the Lady Rams. Mullins secured a whopping 20 rebounds in the game (missing the Texas Wesleyan single-game record by just one) and added six points in the win.

 

The Lady Rams will play Texas College on Monday, February 28 in the final game before the conference tournament. Game time is scheduled for a 5:30 p.m. start.
