PLAINVIEW, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University volleyball team (2-0) took a pair of wins at Wayland Baptist University’s Coke Classic on Friday. After cruising to a 3-0 win over the University of the Southwest (0-2), the Lady Rams took a hotly contested match 3-1 against Wayland Baptist (1-1).
Against USW, the Lady Rams hit .326 for the match, while the Mustangs turned in 18 hitting errors against 18 kills. That resulted in easy scores of 25-17, 25-10, and 25-16.
The match with WBU proved to be a much tougher test. Game one was tied 11 times, the last coming at 20-20. Rosenbusch put the ball away to put Texas Wesleyan ahead for good as the Lady Rams eked out a 25-23 win. Game three was much the same story, but back-to-back hitting errors gave the Pioneers the final two points of a 25-23 win.
WBU jumped ahead 12-5 early in game three, but Texas Wesleyan fought all the way back to tie the game at 15 with a service ace from Arroyo. Later a kill from
Bailey Bunting put the Lady Rams up 17-16. The lead changed hands two more times before Rosenbusch put down a kill to finish a 25-23 TWU win.
Game four saw eleven ties and five lead changes, but a key 5-0 run gave the Lady Rams a 20-15 advantage that WBU could not overcome. Texas Wesleyan finished the match with a 25-21 win. In total the match rolled through 34 tie scores and 12 lead changes.
Bunting posted a match-high 17 kills, while Rosenbusch added 13. Arroyo (22 assists) and
Stephanie Dominguez (21 assists) split time at setter. The Lady Rams stymied the Pioneer attack with 68 digs, while four players reached double-figures in digs led by
Alex Hendee's 16.
The Lady Rams will continue action at the Coke Classic on Saturday. They will face Lubbock Christian University at 11:00 a.m. and Our Lady of the Lake University at 3:00 p.m.
