FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University women’s soccer team (1-0) took a 2-0 win over Howard Payne University (0-1-1) on opening day at Martin Field on Friday.
A shorthanded Texas Wesleyan team braved the heat, the game time temperature was 105 degrees, and took the lead early.
Whitney Chappell, a senior from Fort Worth, scored the season’s first goal just 6:50 into the contest when Leah Valtman found her off of a free kick.
Six minutes later, HPU goalkeeper Adrienne Walker saved a shot from Chappell, but the ball caromed off the left post and came right to
Kaeley Albus who put the ball in the net to bring the score to 2-0.
Texas Wesleyan controlled the ball throughout the contest, outshooting the Yellow Jackets 21-7 for the game, including 14-0 in the first half.
Walker made 10 saves for HPU, while
Aubree Gallego needed just three saves to record the shutout in her first game with Texas Wesleyan.
“This was an outstanding effort considering we only had twelve players available,” commented head coach Josh Gibbs. “I thought we possessed the ball better than we have in a few years. It was nice to see us control the game against one of the better Howard Payne teams I’ve seen.”
The Lady Rams will return to action on Saturday, when they host Wayland Baptist University. That game is scheduled for a 5:30 p.m. start at Martin Field.
