FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan Men’s soccer team (1-1) notched its first win of the season by knocking off Wayland Baptist University (0-2) 4-1 on Saturday night.
Each team got off to an aggressive start that continued for much of the contest. The Rams got off the first five shots that had the Pioneers on their heels early. Texas Wesleyan kept the pressure on, and in the 24th minute that pressure paid off as a shot by Liren Halle from the right wing touched the back of the net for his first goal of the season and a Rams lead at 1-0. Edward Vega tallied the assist on the play. Not much later, in the 29th minute, Halle scored again, this time from Javier Padilla giving the Rams a 2-0 cushion.
Wayland Baptist got one back off of a Rams defensive miscue that gave a good look for Jevaughn Vance to score, cutting the lead to 2-1 Wesleyan.
TJ Romaguera notched his first goal of the season from Adam Pierce to give the Rams a two goal lead again in the 40th minute at 3-1. Halle then put in a beautiful shot from in the box off of a throw in by Ricardo Aguilera to put the Rams over the top at 4-1 in the 60th minute.
Halle took eight shots, three for goals, while Romaguera took two shots, one for a goal. Dejan Milosevic played brilliant in goal despite the one hiccup, making eight saves in the effort.
Wesleyan out-shot the Pioneers 21 to 13. Fouls were lopsided with Wesleyan receiving 21 to the Pioneers’ eight.
The Rams take on St. Gregory’s University on Tuesday, September 6, at 7:00 p.m. at Martin Field.
