FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University women’s soccer team rolled over Central Christian College of Kansas (1-5) 8-0 at Martin Field on Saturday. With the win, the Lady Rams improved to 6-0, marking the best start in program history.
With the win, the Rams also matched the program record for consecutive wins. The 2006 squad put together six consecutive shutout victories.
Junior forward
Jessica Watton started where she left off on Friday. After chipping in three goals in the second half against Northwestern Oklahoma State yesterday afternoon, Watton knocked in three more in the first half against Central Christian.
Watton got things started with a goal on an assist from
Karissa Olson just 4:04 into the contest. Watton added a second goal in the 14th minute. Olson then found the net on an assist from
Paige Wheaton in the 17th minute. Twelve minutes later
Katherine Bynum and
Erin Bethany connected passes to Wheaton to bring the score to 4-0.
Goalkeeper
Aubree Gallego got in on the act in the 30th minute, when her strike cleared the field where Watton collected the ball and hit the back of the net.
Allison Walsh scored in the 35th minute and Bethany converted a penalty kick in the 41st minute and the Lady Rams led 7-0 at the intermission.
In the first period, Texas Wesleyan outshot Central Christian 24-0, scoring on seven of their 10 shots on goal. The Pace slowed considerably in the second half, but the Lady Rams did add a goal from
Leah Valtman on an assist from Walsh in the 85th minute.
For the game, the Lady Rams took 46 shots, including 20 on target, while allowing only two. Gallego and
Alexxa Shelton combined on the Lady Rams’ fifth shutout of the season.
“We took care of business today,” said head coach Josh Gibbs. “Now we have to prepare for a very tough Oklahoma City team. That is going to be a great test for us.”
The Lady Rams will put their win streak on the line on Tuesday, when they host 15th ranked Oklahoma City University. That game is scheduled for a 5:00 p.m. start at Martin Field.
