FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University women’s soccer team (7-0) ran its winning streak to seven consecutive games, marking a new school record, with a 2-1 win over 13th ranked Oklahoma City University at Martin Field on Tuesday.

The Rams and Stars battled to a scoreless draw through 45 minutes. OCU took a slight edge in shots (6-4) and shots on goal (3-2), but neither team could find the net.

OCU outshot Texas Wesleyan 14-7 in the second half, but the Rams made their opportunities count. Jessica Watton stayed hot, scoring off a feed from Paige Wheaton  in the 61st minute. OCU got that goal back four minutes later when Meghan McMahon scored off a corner kick from Allie Glazner.

In the 68th minute, Watton hit the right post from close range, but the junior forward stayed with the play and hammered the rebound home for the eventual game-winner.

Texas Wesleyan had just two shots on target in the second half, but they both found the net. OCU led 20-11 in shots for the game and 9-4 in shots on goal, but Aubree Gallego came up with a season-high eight saves to preserve the win.

Watton, who leads the team and the Red River Athletic Conference with 10 goals on the year, has scored eight times in her last three games.

“My hat’s off to Oklahoma City,” commented head coach Josh Gibbs. “They are just plain good and very well coached. I thought they played well enough to win, but it came down to a bounce of the ball and our work rate. I am so proud of our girls. Our work rate was through the roof.”

The Rams will return to action on Friday, when they travel to Chickasha, OK, to take on the University of Science and Arts. That game is scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. start.
