CHICKASHA, OK: The Texas Wesleyan University women’s soccer team (7-1) saw its school record seven-game winning streak snapped on Friday. The Lady Rams were defeated 2-1 in overtime at the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma (3-0).
The Lady Rams quickly found themselves in unfamiliar territory. When USAO’s Megan Wilkerson scored off of a corner kick Taylor Fain in the 16th minute, Texas Wesleyan trailed for only the second time this season.
The Drovers held the Lady Rams to just three shots in the first half, while taking eight on their end. Wilkerson’s goal held well into the second half. In the 72nd minute, a charging Texas Wesleyan squad finally broke through with a goal from
Jessica Watton.
Texas Wesleyan outshot USAO 8-6 in the second half.
Aubree Gallego made three of her seven saves in the final 18 minutes to send the game to overtime.
Watton had a quick look to start the extra period, but USAO ended the contest in the 106th minute when another corner kick from Fain’s found Jordyn Yates for the game-winner.
“I really believe we played well enough to win,” commented head coach Josh Gibbs. “We were just unlucky against a very good USAO team today.”
For the game, the Drovers outshot the Lady Rams 15-12. Gallego notched seven saves, while USAO’s Addie Tipton finished with eight.
The Lady Rams will return to action on Sunday, when they travel to Victoria, TX, to take on the University of Houston Victoria. That game is scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. start.
