FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University women’s soccer team (3-0) scored two goals in the second half to take a 2-1 win over John Brown University (1-1-1) at Martin Field on Friday.
John Brown controlled the contest for much of the first half, outshooting the Lady Rams 8-3 in the period. Madi Susmilch put the Golden Eagles up 1-0 when she scored off of a Casey O’Brien corner kick in the 23rd, minute. That goal ended the Lady Rams streak at 202 minutes 24 seconds without allowing a goal, marking a new school record to start a season.
Texas Wesleyan came out with a much better effort in the second half. In the 60th minute
Jessica Watton found the back of the net off a feed from
Erin Bethany, but offside was initially called by the linesman. After conferring, the center referee ruled that the offside player was not involved in the play and the goal stood.
Aubree Gallego made four saves in the win. The Lady Rams had just two shots on goal, but made them both count. Overall, JBU led 16-11 in shots and 3-2 in corner kicks.
“This was definitely not our best effort, but at least we found a way to win,” commented head coach Josh Gibbs. “When you play this many freshmen, it sometimes takes a while for them to understand what we need, but they responded and played much better in the second half to beat a pretty good John Brown team.”
The Lady Rams jump right back into action on Saturday, when they host MidAmerica Nazarene University. That game is scheduled for a 3:00 p.m. start at Martin Field.
