TYLER, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University women’s soccer team (10-1, 2-0 RRAC) finished off a four-game road swing at 3-1 with a 4-0 win at Texas College (1-6, 1-1) on Saturday.

Jessica Watton, a junior forward from Royal Oak, MI, entered the contest with 14 goals on the season, three behind the national leader, Southern Nazarene University’s Jackie Acevedo. Watton was up to the task, netting her third hat trick of the season and running her scoring streak to nine consecutive games. Just for good measure, she knocked home a fourth goal and moved into the national lead with 18 on the year.

In the 38th minute Watton drew a foul at the top of the box. She converted the ensuing free kick to give the Rams a 1-0 lead.

Whitney Chappell found Watton in front of the net for a second goal in the 53rd minute. Leah Valtman combined with Watton in the 70th minute to make it 3-0. In the 73rd minute, Watton capped her day with a goal from Karissa Olson.

For the game, the Lady Rams outshot the Steers 18-9, including 12-2 on goal. Texas Wesleyan took four corner kicks to Texas College’s one. The Rams were also whistled for 17 fouls to 12 for the Steers.

Aubree Gallego needed just two saves to lock down her sixth shutout of the season. Diana Martinez made eight stops for the Steers.

“I’m happy with the win, but we are still struggling with slow starts,” commented head coach Josh Gibbs. “We need to put together ninety quality minutes going forward. Now we have to turn our attention to Our Lady of the Lake and UT-Brownsville next week.”

The Lady Rams will return home on Thursday, September 29, when they host Our Lady of the Lake University. That game is scheduled for a 5:30 p.m. start at Martin Field.
