Men's Basketball vs. HTU 1/14/12 Gallery
FORT WORTH, TX: The sixth ranked Texas Wesleyan University men’s basketball team (12-3, 7-2 RRAC) cruised to a 114-72 over Huston-Tillotson University (0-15, 0-11) at the Burge Alumni Classic on Saturday.
The Classic is named for Texas Wesleyan University Athletic Hall of Famers Gene and Ann Burge. Texas Wesleyan lost a dear friend with Gene’s passing last year. Ann and her family were on hand to be honored at halftime on Saturday. Many notable alums were in attendance as well, reminiscing 74 seasons of Texas Wesleyan Men’s Basketball with many notable alums. Since 1935 Texas Wesleyan has won 1,115 games, 20 conference championships, and made 13 NAIA National Tournament appearances.
The Rams made the home crowd happy right away. A 9-0 run to start the game featured a three from
Ronnie Moss and a slam from
Eric Frederick. Moss and Frederick bombed in nine threes in the first nine and a half minutes as the Rams stretched their lead to 32-17. Frederick (28 points) and Moss (19) combined for 47 first half points and the Rams led 55-38 at the break.
In the second half, head coach Terry Waldrop was able to spread the minutes around, leading to a season-high 32 points for the Rams’ bench. The Rams continually stretched their lead throughout the second half. A three from
Blake Dunson gave Texas Wesleyan its largest lead of the game at 109-67. That 42-point margin held at the buzzer 114-72.
“I thought we played the second half in particular the most complete game we’ve played all year,” Waldrop commented. “Defensively, offensively, the second half was the best we’ve played all year. It was a complete team win with everybody contributing and doing their part. This is the team we expected this year. The second half was championship level basketball.”
For the game, the Rams shot 52.6% from the field and 47.8% from long range while holding HTU to 31% form the field and 10.5% from beyond the arc.
Moss led all scorers with 35 points to go with eight assists and four rebounds in 32 minutes on the floor. Frederick was right behind with 33 points and eight rebounds in 27 minutes.
Jazz Holman came off the bench to contribute 11 points, five boards, and four assists.
Brian Talley added 11 assists to the win.
Ronzelle Fort led Huston-Tillotson with 27 points and 12 rebounds. Charles Jones posted 21 points as well.
The Rams will return to action on Thursday when they host the University of the Southwest. That game is scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. start in the Sid Richardson Center.
