FORT WORTH, TX:  The Texas Wesleyan University men’s basketball team (13-3, 8-2 RRAC) took a convincing 105-79 win over the University of the Southwest Mustangs (8-7, 5-6) at the Sid Richardson Center on Thursday.

The Rams led wire-to-wire against the Mustangs.  Texas Wesleyan shot a solid 48.6% from the field in the first half and held a double-figure advantage for much of the period.  USW’s Benny Baeza closed the half with a three-pointer that sent the Mustangs to the locker room down 43-34.

Texas Wesleyan picked up the intensity in the second half, hitting at a 62.2% clip including 5-of-9 (55.6%) from long range.  Ronnie Moss threw in eight points in an 11-0 run to start the period.  Midway through the frame, Eric Frederick threw down a fast break dunk, and after a defensive stop, Moss made it a 20-point game (72-52) with a three pointer.  The margin swelled to as many as 32 points (102-70) on the way to a 105-79 final score.

For the game, the Rams shot 55.4% from the floor and 42.9% (9-21) from distance, while holding Southwest to 42.3% from the floor and 36.7% (11-30) from beyond the arc.  The Rams blasted the Mustangs on the boards 53-30 and on points in the paint 56-26.

“This was a good win, but we still need to improve,” commented head coach Terry Waldrop.  “Our rebounding was better tonight, but our shot selection overall was only ok.  We will continue to get better.”

The Rams posted five players in double-figure scoring, led by Frederick and Moss who combined on 54 points.  Frederick added eight rebounds to his 30 point night.  Moss contributed eight assists in addition to his 24 points.  Chris Britt-Black followed with 15 points, while Oscar Griffin finished with 12, and Jazz Holman came off the bench for 11 points, six rebounds, and five steals.  Stephane Mudiay also brought down 10 rebounds in the win.

The game featured both of the current Red River Athletic Conference Co-Players of the Week: Moss, who just edged Frederick for the TWU nomination, and USW’s Demetrius Evans.  Evans finished with 21 points and three rebounds.  Michael Darden chipped in 15 points for the Mustangs as well.

The Rams will return to action on Saturday, when they travel to Langston University for the first of back-to-back contests with the Lions.  That game is scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. start.  The Rams will then host the Lions at 7:30 p.m. on Monday.
