Women's Basketball vs. Southwest 1/19/12 Gallery
FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University women’s basketball team (13-3, 8-2 RRAC) picked up another easy home win against the University of the Southwest (6-11, 1-10 RRAC). The Lady Rams took it to the Lady Mustangs with a 101-70 rout at the Sid Richardson Center on Thursday Night.
The Lady Rams wasted no time overpowering the Lady Mustangs, scoring early and often, mostly in the paint. Wesleyan took a 9-0 run five minutes in to take a 16-4 lead. Texas Wesleyan maintained a hefty lead throughout the first half, keeping Southwest on their heels.
The Lady Rams grabbed their largest lead with a Nicole Terral 3-pointer with 1:19 left to make it a 27 point, 52-25 game. Texas Wesleyan took a 52-27 lead to the break.
The Lady Rams shot 50 percent or better in every category in the first half, while the Lady Mustangs struggled shooting 39 percent from the field and 2-12 for 16 percent from behind the arc.
The Lady Mustangs could do nothing about the Lady Rams scoring at will in the second half, as Wesleyan continued their overwhelming dominance from the field shooting 62.5 percent in the second half. The Lady Rams also played disciplined basketball, only committing 12 fouls in the contest. Texas Wesleyan also controlled the boards the entire night, out rebounding Southwest 55-26. 34 of the 55 rebounds were offensive, which led to Wesleyan outscoring the Lady Mustangs 21-4 on second chance points.
The Lady Rams led by as much as 38 with a Raven Smith layup that made it 83-46 with nine minutes left in the game. Although the Lady Mustangs made five consecutive 3 pointers, and went 11-24 (45.8%) from behind the arc in the second half, the lead was much to large to overcome and the Lady Rams coasted to a 101-70 win.
That win marks the 22nd consecutive home win for the Lady Rams.
The Lady Rams had a great night shooting, going 56 percent from the field and from downtown for the game, while shooting 54 percent from the free throw line.
Brittany White and Smith led the charge, scoring 13 points each. Octavia Mullins posted her second consecutive double double with 10 points and 14 boards. Kristi Alexander had a complete game with 12 points, 5 assists, four rebounds, and three steals. In all, five players reached double figures, and every player for head coach Bill Franey scored.
The Lady Rams have a tough road test as they travel to take on 5th ranked Langston University on Saturday, January 21st. Game time is scheduled for a 5:30 start.
