FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University men’s soccer team (9-6-2) ran straight through LSU-Shreveport 3-0 in the semi-final match of the RRAC Tournament at Martin Field on Friday.
The Rams got all over the Pilots from the first whistle, simply out working LSU-Shreveport. The Pilots had to work on their heels and in the tenth minute, Ivan Kovacevic beat the keeper with chip shot over the head of Lance Quini on a ball played from Hector Sanchez.
Texas Wesleyan played creatively dangerous and in the fifteenth minute, it paid off. Marin Jonic found the ball at his feet and beat a diving Quini as the ball just sneaked in the past the right post to make it a 2-0 early in the first half.
Quini made a magnificent save on a Victor Ordonez gem that the keeper just got enough of to push above the cross bar late in the half.
The backline of the Rams played outstanding in the first half, snuffing out nearly all of the Pilot runs. LSU-Shreveport was only able to take one shot in the first half, due to the very organized defensive play.
The Pilots just had all of the wind taken out their sails it seemed as the two early goals made a hole they were not expecting to have to trek out of.
Wesleyan took 10 shots, three on goal, and seven corner opportunities in the first half, while the Pilots managed one shot with three corners.
The Rams dominated the second half taking 14 shots, one of which came off of TJ Romaguera’s foot to the back of the net to give the Rams a 3-0 cushion. Jose Albores tallied the assist on the play.
This was enough for the Pilots as the Rams coasted to victory. Wesleyan took 24 shots in the game, while LSU-S took three. The Rams took 12 corners and dominated possession throughout the entire match.
With the win, the Rams qualify for a bid in the national tournament. The Rams will play Our Lady of the Lake, who defeated Northwood 2-1 in the semi-final match, for the championship tomorrow at 7:30 p.m. at Martin Field.
