Lady Rams Fly past Wayland Baptist Flying Queens in Season Opener

The Texas Wesleyan women’s basketball team opened up the season with a win against future Sooner Athletic Conference foe Wayland Baptist, as the squad traveled to Lubbock, Texas on Friday night in an impressive 72-56 win.

The Queens, who won big in their season opener the night before against Oklahoma Panhandle State University, were unable to hold on to the lead they held at halftime as Texas Wesleyan came out high powered on offense in the second half outscoring Wayland Baptist to grab the first win of the season.

The Lady Rams fell behind early in the first half as CeCe Williams for the Queens connected behind the three-point line to give Wayland Baptist an early 12-5 lead.

A jumper by Takoia Larry gave Texas Wesleyan their first lead of the first half at 31-29 with .55 seconds remaining on the clock but it was a foul by Kayla McCray that sent Jordan Scott-Benson of the Queens to the line who knocked down both free throw shots and a shot on an assist by Olivia Patterson to give Wayland Baptist a two-point lead going into the locker room at halftime.

After the half, Texas Wesleyan started a 14-2 run to put the score ahead 57-44 with 6:56 remaining in the half. Wayland Baptist was unable to catch up to the Lady Rams and a three-pointer by Kalynn Williams on an assist from J’Tierra Brown sealed the game for Texas Wesleyan as the squad begins the season 1-0.

Turnovers seemed to be costly for the Queens, as the Lady Rams took advantage and scored 32 points during the game off of turnovers from Wayland Baptist.

Takoia Larry led the way in points for the Lady Rams with 17 and J’Tierra Brown followed with 15. Toeisha Cooper tallied up 11 points, 5 steals, and 1 block in the season opening win.

The Lady Rams will play their second game of the season Saturday afternoon in Lubbock as they take on Lubbock Christian University at 2:00 p.m.
