SHAWNEE, Oklahoma-- The Texas Wesleyan men’s basketball team suffered their first loss of the season on Friday night, as the Rams were upset by the St. Gregory Cavaliers 91-81 in the first game of the St. Gregory Thanksgiving Classic at W.P. Wood Field House.
The Cavs were off to a hot start from the tip-off and the Rams were unable to find an answer early on. The Rams trailed by as much as 23 points in the first half and were out-rebounded by SGU 24-15.
Texas Wesleyan entered the half with their largest halftime deficit of the season, trailing 31-50.
The hot scoring would not simmer down for the Cavs at the start of the second half but would only steam up as SGU went up by as much as 28 points with 16:35 remaining in the game.
The resilience factor would soon show up for the Rams as the team tried to battle their way back into the game. The Rams sliced deep into the lead by going on a 27-12 run to get within 13.
With .39 seconds remaining the Rams were able to cut the lead to single digits only trailing the Cavs by nine, but it was too late for the Rams and SGU were able to pull off the upset with a final score 91-81.
Fayzon Richey became SGU’s all-time leading scorer in the win over the Rams. Richey had a double-double in the game with 22 points and 12 rebounds.
Dallas Jones led the way in points for the Rams with 26. Oscar Griffin followed right behind Jones with 25 points and 7 rebounds. The Rams fall to 3-1 on the season with the loss.
Texas Wesleyan will look to return to their winning ways on Saturday afternoon as the Rams will take on The University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma in their second game in the St. Gregory Thanksgiving Classic. The game is set to tip-off at 2:00 p.m.
