FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan men’s basketball team (2-0) played their first home game of the season Monday night as the Rams hosted Wayland Baptist University at the Sid Richardson Center. The Rams defeated the Pioneers 81-65 to improve to 2-0 on the season. Wayland Baptist falls to 0-2. Texas Wesleyan downed yet another future Sooner Athletic Conference opponent in just the second game this season, as the Rams also defeated Lubbock Christian in the season opener.
“Hard fought win tonight against another tough Sooner Conference opponent,” said head coach Brennen Shingleton. “We have a lot of room for improvement, but we continue to be unselfish and defend as a team.”
The defense was on full display Monday night as the Rams only trailed within the opening minute of the tip-off. After Dallas Jones hit a three-pointer to put the Rams up at 3-2 at the 19:13 mark in the first half, Texas Wesleyan would never trail the rest of the game.
Three pointers proved to be a major factor in the first half for Texas Wesleyan, as the Rams were 7-11 (63.6%) from behind the three point line while the Pioneers struggled as they were 1-9 (11.1%) from behind the arc.
The Rams went into halftime with a 9 point lead at 38-29.
Oscar Griffin would sink down a three for the Rams to start the second half to continue the successful three-point shooting from the first half to put the score at 41-29 within the opening seconds of the second period. The Pioneers answered back with a basket by Juhreece Thompson on an assist from Travis Payton which prompted a 10-0 run for Wayland Baptist as the climbed back in the game to put the score at 41-40.
Another three-pointer made for the Rams by Mo Weathers on an assist from Dallas Jones would in return spark a 13-0 run by the Rams to put the score at 54-40 with 13:00 minutes remaining in the half. The Pioneers were unable to get within single digits for the rest of the period as Texas Wesleyan won their second game of the season with a final score of 81-65.
Dallas Jones led the way for the Rams with 19 points, 5 rebounds, and 2 assists. Jazz Holman picked up the most rebounds for the team with 9 and also chalked up 13 points, 5 assists and 4 steals. The Rams out-rebounded the Pioneers 39-25 in the win and also shot a significant difference behind the three point line as the Rams were 52.4 percent to only 17.4 percent for the Pioneers.
Head Coach Brennen Shingleton was not only pleased on the performance of his team but also for the fan involvement.
“I was really excited about the turnout of students, former players and fans,” said Shingleton. “It turned out to be a great college basketball atmostphere. I am looking forward to getting back to practice and working out some kinks.”
The Rams will have a week before the team returns to action as they will host Northwood on Monday, November 12
th at the Sid Richardson Center. Tip-off is set at 7:30 pm.
