FORT WORTH, Texas— Dallas Jones scored 24 points and grabbed 5 rebounds to lead the Texas Wesleyan men’s basketball team past Huston-Tillotson University with a 90-84 victory at the Sid Richardson Center on Saturday afternoon.

The Rams (6-1) picked up their sixth win of the season as Huston-Tillotson (1-6) received their sixth loss.

Chris Angsomwine would snag the first basket of the afternoon off of an assist from Mo Weathers as both teams would battle basket for basket for much of the start of the first period.

A foul by Seandre Sadler would send Demetrius Smith to the line as the sophomore forward sunk down both free throw opportunities which in return would spark a 10-2 run for Huston-Tillotson.

Smith would connect from behind the arc on an assist from Calvin McGhee to put Huston-Tillotson ahead at 31-25 with 5:58 remaining in the first half. Tyrice Hill would also connect from the three-point line and then would nail down a free throw to give HTU their largest lead of the night with an 8-point cushion at 35-27.

The Rams answered back with a three pointer of their own from senior guard Mo Weathers. Weathers shot 2-2 from behind the arc and came away with 12 points and 8 assists in the win.

Huston-Tillotson would find their 8-point cushion again before the first period expired as Hill downed another three-pointer to push HTU at 40-32 with 2:10 to play in the first half.

Dallas Jones hit from inside the paint to help squander the deficit before halftime for the Rams. A foul by Lance Richardson would also send Jones to the line as he knocked down an additional bucket to put the Rams within five at 40-35.

A jumper by Bryan Werner cut the lead to three at 40-37 with 1:22 remaining to play. With less than a minute to go, a foul was called on Oscar Griffin which sent Anthony Carroll to the line for HTU as the sophomore was able to sink both shots to give Huston-Tillotson a 42-37 lead entering the half.

The Rams were only able to shoot 22.2 percent from the three-point line in the first half but the percentage significantly went up in the second half as the Rams scored 60 percent from behind the arc. After a jumper by Dallas Jones, Brian Talley sunk down a three-pointer on an assist by Jazz Holman. Talley hit another three to give the Rams their first lead since the 11 minute mark in the first half at 45-44.

Talley had nine points and three assists in the game.

Mo Weathers, who led the team in assists with 8, was able to find Jazz Holman in the paint as Holman made an easy layup to help extend the lead. Oscar Griffin hit a long three to push the Rams ahead at 50-44 with 16:14 remaining in the second half.

Griffin had 17 points and 3 rebounds in the win.

Huston-Tillotson ignited a 7-0 run to tie the score at 56-56 with 11:31 remaining left in the game. That would be as close as HTU would get as the squad was unable to recapture the lead as Texas Wesleyan pulled ahead to seal the deal on their sixth victory of the season.

Head Coach Brennen Shingleton was proud of the resilient effort his team put forward on the court.

“I am very proud of our resiliency,” said Shingleton. “HTU is a tremendously improved program. I love our team. We just have to keep working, stay on course, and take it one game at a time.”

The Rams will host Our Lady of the Lake University on Monday, December 3rd at the Sid Richardson Center. Tip-off is set at 7:30 p.m.
