The Texas Wesleyan Lady Rams (5-1) extended their winning streak to four games as the squad topped Huston-Tillotson 68-63 at the Sid Richardson Center on Saturday afternoon. Kayla McCray led the way in points for the Lady Rams with 16. McCray also grabbed five rebounds in the win.
The Lady Rams jumped out to a 14-2 lead to start of the first half. Kayla McCray was able to lay it up to give put the Lady Rams in double digits in points with ten at the 17:15 mark in the first half. A layup by J’Tierra Brown followed by one from Carneisha Sims put the score at 14-2 with 15:32 remaining in the half.
Huston-Tillotson would start to warm up as the squad was able to pull into the game. A three-pointer by Mariah Silva helped HTU get within three with the score at 22-19 with 07:17 in the first.
A layup by Shaniqua Thomas on an assist from Danielle Franklin at the end of the first half would put the HTU down two points going into halftime as the Lady Rams entered the half with the 33-31 lead.
Franklin would hit a jumper for HTU at the start of the second half to tie the score at 33. Shortly after, Takoia Larry hit a jumper on an assist from Brown to push the Lady Rams ahead. The Lady Rams would hold on to come away with the victory.
Toeisha Cooper was two rebounds shy of a double-double as the junior forward had 13 points and 8 rebounds in the win. J’Tierra Brown had 14 points and four rebounds.
“Today was a great way for the team to begin the Red River Conference schedule, where every game is a key game,” said head coach Bill Franey. “The girls stepped up and made the plays needed to win a close game.”
