Rams Fall at Wiley

Box Score

MARSHALL, TX: The 12th ranked Texas Wesleyan University men’s basketball team (20-5, 15-4 RRAC) had its five-game winning streak snapped at Wiley College (17-8, 13-7) on Thursday.  The Wildcats prevailed by a final score of 80-67.

The absence of Ronnie Moss' 22.8 points per game finally caught up with the Rams.  After winning two straight road games without the services of the nation’s fifth leading scorer, the Rams failed to make it three at Wiley.

The Wildcats got away quickly in the first half as the Rams struggled to hold onto the ball.  Wiley outscored Texas Wesleyan 23-5 over an eight minute period to take a 33-14 lead.  Sixteen Texas Wesleyan turnovers in the period led to a 20-7 Wildcat advantage in points off of turnovers, and Wiley went to the locker room with a healthy 46-25 lead.

After trailing 55-31 early in the second half, the Rams made a late push to cut the score to 69-56 with 5:40 to play.  However, the Wildcats answered with a 6-1 run to put the game away.

For the game, the Wildcats outshot the Rams 54%-35% from the field and held a commanding 41-33 advantage on the glass.  Although the turnover margin was 21-20, Wiley held a 26-17 edge in points off of turnovers.

“There are a lot of things we have to do to win,” commented head coach Terry Waldrop, “and we did not do them tonight.  We were outexecuted and outplayed.”

Eric Frederick led the Rams with 19 points.  Oscar Griffin finished with 17 points, and Stephane Mudiay came off the bench to add 10 points for Texas Wesleyan.

Wiley was led by Kenny LaGuerre’s 20 points and 10 rebounds.  Richard Simon added 14 points in the win.

The Rams will return to action on Saturday, when they host Texas College.  That game, which will feature Homecoming festivities, is scheduled for a 4:00 p.m. start in the Sid Richardson Center.
