Rams Take Road Win Over Bulldogs

HAWKINS, TX:  The fourteenth ranked Texas Wesleyan University men’s basketball team (17-4, 12-3 RRAC) took an 86-80 win at Jarvis Christian College (8-14, 7-10) on Saturday.
 
The Rams struggled to hit shots in the first half, dialing in at a 27% clip for the period.  After Jarvis jumped out to a 9-1 lead, Brian Talley and Ronnie Moss both hit three’s during a 10-0 Texas Wesleyan run.  The Rams continued to lead 21-19, with 7:25 to play and the score was later tied at 23.  However, the Bulldogs took control with a 10-2 run that brought the score to 33-25.  Moss converted a fast break layup at the horn to limit the damage to 34-29 at the intermission.
 
The Rams righted the ship in the second half, shooting a crisp 55.9% from the floor including 5-of-13 (38.5%) from distance.  Early in the period, eight straight points in the paint gave Texas Wesleyan a 43-41 advantage.  The Rams pushed ahead 64-57 after an Oscar Griffin layup, but the Bulldogs charged back to tie the game at 71.  The game reached its eleventh tie at 73-73 with 3:32 to play when a fast break three from Moss sparked a 7-0 run that essentially sealed the win for the Rams.
 
For the game, the Rams outshot the Bulldogs 40.8%-36.8%.  Texas Wesleyan also led 18-11 in second chance points and 25-19 on the fast break.
 
“Any road win is a good win,” commented head coach Terry Waldrop.  “I thought we did things in the second half that were necessary to win the game.”
 
Eric Frederick notched his ninth double-double of the season with a game-high 29 points to go with 12 rebounds.  Moss finished with 27 points in the win.  Griffin also posted a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.  Chris Angsomwine came off the bench to contribute seven points and 10 boards for the Rams.
 
Jarvis was led by Brian Lockett’s 15 points and eight assists.  Maurice Jackson added 14 points and nine rebounds for the Bulldogs.
 
The Rams will return to action on Monday, when they host the University of the St. Thomas.  That game is scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. start in the Sid Richardson Center.
