HAWKINS, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University women’s basketball team (16-5, 11-4 RRAC) held off a late charge from Jarvis Christian College (11-6, 11-6) to take a 53-50 win on Saturday.
The first half saw the lead change hands twice. Texas Wesleyan jumped ahead quickly, 10-5, but Jarvis went on a 9-2 run to lead 14-12 midway through the period. The Bulldogs led 18-15, when
Octavia Mullins,
Nicole Terral, and
Kayla McCray scored in succession to put the Rams up 21-18. Although they shot just 32% in the first half, the Rams took a 25-22 advantage into the break. The Rams made up for the subpar shooting by grabbing 11 offensive rebounds for seven second chance points and forcing 14 turnovers for six more points.
In the second half, a layup from McCray capped a 7-0 run that gave the Rams a double-figure lead at 34-24. That lead swelled to 12 at 43-31 before the Bulldogs began to chip away. The Bulldogs whittled away the lead until a three-pointer from Kearia Rayson tied the game at 46 with 3:15 to play. After a layup from Mullins, Jametria Green buried a three, and Jarvis led 49-48.
Texas Wesleyan later regained a 51-50 lead with two free throws from McCray. After a defensive stop, McCray scored off a
Kristi Alexander assist to cap the scoring at 53-50.
Both teams shot 37% from the floor. The Rams held a 39-30 advantage on the glass including 14-8 in offensive rebounds. Texas Wesleyan forced 24 turnovers while committing 18.
Alexander was the catalyst for the Rams, filling the stat sheet with eight points, eight assists, eight steals, three rebounds, and a blocked shot. McCray turned in a team-high 17 points. Mullins posted her thirteenth double-double of the season with 11 points and 16 rebounds.
JCC was led by Ivory Russell’s 19 points and 11 boards. Marsharae Brown added 13 points and nine rebounds.
The Lady Rams will return to action on Monday, when they host the University of St. Thomas. That game is scheduled for a 5:30 p.m. start in the Sid Richardson Center.
