Lady Rams Shutdown Lions

Box Score

WAXAHACHIE, TX:  The Texas Wesleyan University women’s basketball team (18-5, 13-4 RRAC) turned in a terrific defensive effort en route to a 56-35 win at Southwestern Assemblies of God University (9-14, 6-11) on Thursday.

The Lady Rams got the better of a defensive battle in the first half, holding the Lions to a paltry 17.9% (5-28) shooting and 13 points in the period.  After Texas Wesleyan jumped ahead 12-7, the game hit a stumbling block as neither team scored during a stretch of 4:36.  Still, 38% shooting was good enough to send the Lady Rams to the locker room ahead 21-13.

The second half was more of the same as the Lady Rams limited the Lionesses to 25% (8-31) shooting.  An 11-2 run left the Rams with a 20 point lead with 10:22 to play while the Lions had yet to reach 20 points in the game (40-18).  From there, the Rams were in cruise control on their way to the 56-35 victory.

For the game, the Rams outshot the Lions 43%-22% from the field.  Both teams brought down 37 rebounds.  The Rams committed 17 turnovers, while the Lions had 18 miscues.  SAGU’s 35 points and 22% shooting both mark season lows for a Wesleyan opponent.  Meanwhile, the Lady Rams notched a season-high nine blocked shots after entering the game averaging 2.3 blocks per game.

The Rams got the job done inside.  Post players Kayla McCray and Raven Smith led all scorers with 10 points each.  Octavia Mullins added a game-high 10 rebounds in the win.

SAGU was led by Gabby Bruner’s 10 point effort.

The Rams will return to action on Saturday, when they travel to Dallas, TX, to take on Paul Quinn College.  That game is scheduled for a 5:30 p.m. start.
