WAXAHACHIE, TX:  The twentieth ranked Texas Wesleyan University men’s basketball team (25-6) took a 74-59 win over Wiley College (19-11) in the quarterfinal round of the Red River Athletic Conference Tournament on Friday.
 
The first half saw five tie scores and eight lead changes.  A fast break dunk from Eric Frederick gave the senior forward 12 points in the half and the Rams a 27-24 lead with 4:32 to play, but the Wildcats scored the final eight points of the period to lead 32-27 at the break.
 
The Rams wore the Wildcats down quickly in the second half.  Texas Wesleyan stepped up the offensive production to 51% while holding Wiley to 25% in the frame.
 
Another Dunk from Frederick gave the Rams the lead at 38-37.  That was part of a 13-0 run that left Texas Wesleyan in command at 49-37.  Oscar Griffin later chipped in six points during an 8-0 run that gave the Rams their largest lead of the game at 68-47.  From there TWU cruised to the 74-59 win.
 
For the game the Rams outshot the Wildcats 51%-35% from the field and 47% (7-15) -26% (5-19) from long range. Texas Wesleyan led 42-26 on the boards and 32-28 on points in the paint.
 
Frederick paced the effort with 29 points and 13 rebounds.  Griffin added 15 points and eight boards.  Stephane Mudiay chipped in 13 points and four rebounds off the TWU bench.
 
The Wildcats were led by Freddie Haynes’ 14 points while Dominic Jones added 13.
 
With the win, the Rams advance to Saturday’s semifinal where they will meet second seeded LSU-Shreveport.  That game is scheduled for a 3:00 p.m. start in Southwestern Assemblies of God University’s Schaefer Full Life Center.
