FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University women’s soccer team (0-0-1) played the Howard Payne Lady Yellow jackets to a  1-1 draw in the home opener on Friday night.

Both teams looked ready to start the season and played with energy and intensity throughout the first half of the match. Alexis Michaelkovich took the first shot of the game six minutes that went just wide and left of the goal. Shrareh Asadi shot the first shot on goal of the young season in the 11th minute, but Howard Payne’s Adrienne Walker was able to corral it for a save.

Howard Payne answered in the 13th minute with a shot that went into the arms of Aubree Gallego for the save. Leslie Jones got a shot off in the box late in the first half, but the Wesleyan defense denied the ball with a block.

The two teams played to a nil draw in the first half. The Lady Rams outshot the yellow jackets six to four in the slow first half.

The second half continued as the first with both teams not finding an edge, playing solid in the back and snuffing out runs.

Howard Payne finally broke through as Misty Dominguez put one in the back of net off of a play in that was deflected to give the yellow jackets a 1-0 lead in the 81st minute.

It seemed like the Lady Rams would fall in the first match of the season, when Zamora Bell made a move into open field to make it a one vs. one situation. The goalie Walker aggressively charged at the ball beyond the box and Bell tried to play the ball over the Howard Payne goalie, but was unsuccessful as Walker slid to block the ball. Fortunately, Kaeley Albus was following the play, gathered in the rebound and took a shot from near midfield at an open net to tie the game at 1-1 in the 87th minute.

The Lady Rams and Lady Jackets tried to make some runs in the overtime periods, but were unable to best each other, taking the 1-1 tie.

Albus scored her first goal of the season, and her forward mates, Asadi and Bell showed some promise on the pitch as well.

Kayla Walton came in relief for Gallego in the second half and played the rest of the match.

The Lady Rams will play Schriener University on Monday, September 3. That match is set for a 4:00 p.m. start.
