FORT WORTH, Texas – Dallas Jones scored a career-high 28 points and the Texas Wesleyan men’s basketball team snapped LSU-Shreveport’s four-game winning streak with a 97-73 victory over the Pilots (11-4, 7-3 RRAC) at the Sid Richardson Center on Monday night. Jones was one rebound shy of posting a double-double as the junior guard grabbed down 9 rebounds in the win.
“We proved we can play when we prepare mentally and physically,” said head coach Brennen Shingleton. “I am very proud of our finish to this game. It is a one game at a time season for us and I can’t begin to tell you about how excited I am about our daily process.”
The Rams (13-5, 8-4 RRAC) shot the ball 54.8 percent from the field and 45.5 percent from behind the arc in the first half. LSU-Shreveport shot 38.7 percent from the field and struggled at the three-point line, only shooting the ball 20 percent from behind the arc. The Pilots were able to capitalize on free-throw opportunities, shooting 68.8 percent from the line.
The Rams were down by two points at 35-37 with .53 seconds before the half but a steal from Isaiah Jay led to an easy layup to tie the score at 37-37. A turnover on the next possession for the Pilots allowed Texas Wesleyan to take advantage as Brian Talley hit a three-pointer from an assist by Mo Weathers to give the Rams a 40-37 lead at halftime.
Talley scored a career-high 19 points in the win. The senior also came away with 2 assists. Weathers led the team in the rebounding and assists columns with 12 rebounds and 8 assists.
Teance Walton gave the Rams a double-digit lead at the 10:41 mark in the second half with a shot under the basket. The Rams led in double-digits the remainder of the game as the Pilots could not find enough steam to cut into the deficit. Walton had 13 points and 4 rebounds in the game.
After a missed three-point opportunity by Brandon Davis, Oscar Griffin came down with the defensive rebound and answered on the other side with a layup to give the Rams a 21-point advantage at 91-70 with 3:22 remaining to play.
Griffin scored 17 points and a season-high 7 assists. The senior also had 8 rebounds. Kyle Preston also posted a double-digit scoring effort with 11 points.
The Rams will travel to Austin, Texas to take on Huston-Tillotson (4-13, 2-8) on Saturday, January 19
th. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
