FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University women’s basketball team (12-5, 8-3 RRAC) fell to the LSU-Shreveport Lady Pilots (13-3, 8-2 RRAC) 76-66 at the Sid Richardson Center on Monday.
The Lady Rams held a 10-7 lead early in the first half before the Lady Pilots went on a quick 10-0 run to take a 17-10 lead. LSU-S rattled off another 7-0 run to take a 24-14 advantage with just under six minutes left in the first half. Wesleyan cut into the ten point lead with a Toeisha Cooper lay in just before the buzzer to make it a 34-27 lead at the break.
The Lady Rams battled in the second half trying to get back at the Lady Pilots, and eventually tied the game at 54-54 with 7:52 remaining in regulation off of an Audrianna Simpson drive to the basket.
Simpson gave the Wesleyan a slight 58-56 lead by converting on another layup, but the Lady Rams could not sustain a rally. Sharde Henry hit a big three with three minutes left to give LSU-S a 63-60 lead.
Time played heavily against the Rams as they had to foul to try and get back into the ball game, but the Lady Pilots stayed salty at the free throw line taking the deceptive 10-point, 76-66 win.
Head coach Bill Franey knows this game was closer than the final score, “This was a hard game for the team to lose. We hung in there until right up until we had to foul for possession late in the game. The team is improving every game and I think this will show up soon in the win column.”
Cooper led all players with 21 points, adding six rebounds. Kayla McCray was a force in the paint with 17 points to go with six boards. Carneisha Sims had led the team with eight rebounds. Andre’a Davis tallied seven assists in the loss.
The Lady Rams will travel to Austin, TX to take on Huston-Tillotson University (7-12, 5-6 RRAC) on Saturday, January 19 at 5:30 p.m.
