SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Robert Martinez scored a career-high 36 points to lead Our Lady of the Lake University (13-7, 10-3 RRAC) to a 103-81 victory over Texas Wesleyan on Monday night. Martinez was named the Red River Athletic Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week for the dates of Jan. 14-20 on Sunday.
This game marked the second of back-to-back road games for the Rams (13-7, 8-6 RRAC) as they fell to Huston-Tillotson 90-83 in an overtime thriller in Austin, Texas on Saturday.
The first half stayed even throughout between the two teams, but a string of three-pointers for the Saints late in the first period helped OLLU extend a lead into halftime at 40-33.
Oscar Griffin was only one rebound shy from posting a double-double, leading the Rams in rebounding and scoring with 18 points and 9 rebounds.
Mo Weathers led the team in assists with 5 and also racked up 12 points and 4 rebounds.
Inside the opening minutes of the second half, Weathers hit a bucket followed by two made free-throw shots by
Bryan Werner to help the Rams cut into the 7-point halftime deficit and to pull Texas Wesleyan within 3 points at 40-37. Werner had 8 points and 7 rebounds in the game.
A technical foul called on
Dallas Jones sent Martinez to the line as he sunk down both shots to give the Saints a double-digit lead at 54-44 with 14:07 remaining in the half. Despite the effort put forward, the Rams were unable to get within single-digits for the remainder of the half.
The Rams shot the ball 41.67 percent from the field but suffered at the three-point line, shooting 17.65 from behind the arc. The Rams out-rebounded the Saints 46-41.
The Saints capitalized with 15 points off of 21 turnovers committed by Texas Wesleyan.
“That’s the best team we have played all year hands down,” said head coach Brennen Shingleton. “They executed and hit shots. Well coached, all their players are bought in and we ran into a championship level effort from OLLU tonight. If we plan on making any progress, our entire team has to get better every day.”
The Rams return to the court on Saturday, January 26
th hosting Jarvis Christian College (6-12, 4-8 RRAC) at the Sid Richardson Center. Tip-off is set at 4:00 p.m.
