Lady Rams Slip At OLLU

SAN ANTONIO, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University women’s basketball team (12-7, 8-5 RRAC) take a conference road loss to 23rd ranked Our Lady of the Lake University (19-1, 12-1 RRAC)
 
While the teams started the game close at 4-3 Lady Saints for the first three minutes of the first half, the Lady Saints quickly went on an 8-2 run extending the lead to 12-5 before Wesleyan took their first timeout.
 
The Lady Rams caught fire, going on an 8-0 run to take a 17-16 lead with 9:27 remaining capped by a Kashyla Fields jumper from Carneisha Sims.
 
The two teams volleyed the lead until OLLU was able to sustain a lead behind great offensive rebounding and rallying to take a 35-31 lead at the break.
 
The two teams had one blaring weakness that kept the under in the game in the first half of play. For the Lady Saints, it was Wesleyan not taking care of the ball committing 13 turnovers resulting in 14 points. The Lady Saints only had three turnovers that Wesleyan could not convert into points. For the Lady Rams, it was Our Lady of the Lake being ice cold from the floor shooting only 28 percent (14-49) from the floor. The Lady Rams shot 48 percent (14-29) from the floor in the first half.
 
Our Lady of the Lake came out in the second half shooting better and extended the lead to a 45-34 lead three minutes into the second half.
 
The Lady Saints kept the pressure on skating out 60-45 lead midway through the second half as the Lady Ram turnover woes continued.
 
From there, the Lady Saints outscored the Lady Rams 19-11 to take a 79-56 win.
 
“The team played very hard tonight, but a host of little things derailed the effort,” said head coach Bill Franey Monday night.
 
The Lady Saints were not afraid to shoot the ball all night, making 30 of 84 shots taken from the field (35.7 percent). Texas Wesleyan shot 36.5 percent (23-63) for the game. OLLU out-rebounded the Lady Rams 57-47, behind a 27 rebound night from Treshenia Solomon. The stat that stood out the most was the Lady Saints scoring 31 points off turnovers, compared to the Lady Rams six points.
 
The Lady Rams had four players score in double digits. Sims tallied 15 points for Wesleyan. Toeisha Cooper posted 12 points and eight rebounds. Takoia Larry finished with 10 points and nine boards. Fields had 10 points as well for the Lady Rams. Kayla McCray turned in nine points and seven boards in the contest.
 
The Lady Rams will take on Jarvis Christian College on Saturday, January 26 starting at 2:00 p.m.
