Rams Golden Against Eagles

Box Score

FORT WORTH, TX:  Those fans that made it through a rain delayed start and overtime were treated to a thrilling finish just after 10:00 p.m. at Martin Field on Saturday.  The Texas Wesleyan University men's soccer team (9-2-1, 3-1 SAC) defeated Southwestern Christian University (7-4, 2-2 SAC) 1-0 on the strength of Ivan Kovacevic's golden goal.

In the first half, the Rams held a slim 9-7 margin in shots and 3-1 in corner kick opportunities.  Both teams had good looks including SCU's Matheus Magalhaes who hit the crossbar in the 8th minute, but neither team could find the net in the opening period.

Remarkably, the Eagles were not whistled for a foul in the game's first 50:45.  Arnold Martinez (8-2-1) came up with five saves, including a pair at pointblank range, while Kyle Mickleburgh made four stops for the Eagles to keep the game scoreless through regulation.

Just 39 seconds into the first overtime period, Texas Wesleyan's Marin Kovacevic applied high pressure and forced Mickleburgh into an unsuccessful clearing strike.  Ivan Kovacevic was able to corral the ball and beat an out of position keeper for the sudden death goal.

The goal was the 10th of the season and 5th game-winner for Kovacevic who ranks 15th nationally and leads the Sooner Athletic Conference in total points with 28.

For the game, the Rams outshot the Eagles 15-13 and led 6-3 in corner kicks.  Southwestern Christian benefited from an 11-3 foul count.

The Rams will return to action on Tuesday, when they travel to Oklahoma City, OK, to take on Mid-America Christian University in SAC play.  That game is scheduled for a 3:00 p.m. start.
