Lady Rams Power Past Pioneers

PLAINVIEW, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University women’s soccer team (10-2-2, 4-2-1 SAC) downed conference opponent Wayland Baptist University (10-6-0, 5-3-0 SAC) 2-1at J.V. Hilliard Field on Tuesday.
 
The Lady Rams and Lady Pioneers played to a 1-1 tie after the first 45 minutes of the match. The Pioneers wasted no time getting on the board, catching Wesleyan off guard in the fourth minutes of the match. Emarie Holland found the ball in the middle of the box and placed the ball in the right side of the net for a 1-0 lead. Jessica Watton got the Lady Rams on the board with the equalizer on a magnificent goal assisted by a pinpoint throw in from Alexis Michaelkovich. Watton knew exactly how to beat the keeper for her 11th goal of the season.
 
The Lady Rams broke the tie in the second half. Michaelkovich found Watton again, this time off of a Michaelkovich corner kick that Watton headed in to take a 2-1 lead in the 59th minute. Zoe Benson tried to even the score with a shot on goal, but Nikki Lockwood got the save to keep the Rams in front.
 
The Pioneers made one more push in 71 st minute on a good look by Jessica Bell, but Lockwood was solid getting the save. The Lady Rams continued to pressure Wayland Baptist and finished the game strong to seal the 2-1 win.
 
A relatively low shooting match, the Rams and Pioneers took nine apiece. Wesleyan forced six corner kicks to Pioneers three. Watton now has a team leading 12 goals on the season. Michaelkovich picked up her fourth and fifth assists of the season and leads the team in that category.
 
The Lady Rams will come home to play John Brown University on Saturday, October 26 starting at 5:00 pm at Martin Field.
