Golden Eagles Nip Lady Rams at the Horn

Box Score

FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University women's soccer team (10-3-2, 4-3-1 SAC) suffered a 1-0 loss at Martin Field on Saturday as John Brown University's (11-3, 6-1 SAC) Adrienne Kennedy scored a golden goal with 18 seconds to play in double overtime.

Head coach Josh Gibbs paraphrased Ron Washington saying, "That's the way soccer go." Gibbs continued, "I wish I could be disappointed, but that was a great game from both teams today. I can't tell you how proud I am of our players. They gave everything they had, and did enough to win. It just didn't work out for us."

The first half was remarkably tight statistically. Both teams took six shots. The Rams led 2-1 in corner kicks and 5-3 in fouls, while JBU's Kristen Morency made four saves to Nikki Lockwood's three.

With 20 seconds to play in regulation, JBU's Madi Susmilch drew a foul. The ensuing free kick led to a pair of shots. The first by Savannah Beth was blocked in the box. The second from Casey O'Brien sailed just over the net and the game rolled into overtime.

With neither team willing to give an inch, it appeared a bit of luck might be necessary to win the game. With the clock winding down on the second overtime period, a break finally came. JBU caught Texas Wesleyan's back line on their heels in transition when Braydi Frederick cleared a ball from the Eagle's side of the field. Kennedy was able to beat the TWU defense to the ball, make a move and finish with 18 seconds showing on the clock.

For the game the Eagles outshot the Lady Rams 21-13 and led 6-4 in corner kick opportunities. Texas Wesleyan was whistled for 13 fouls to John Brown's 11. Lockwood made eight saves, while Morency made five stops for JBU.

The Lady Rams will return to action on Tuesday, when they travel to Oklahoma City, OK, to take on Oklahoma City University in Sooner Athletic Conference play. That game is scheduled for a 5:00 p.m. start.
