FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University men's soccer team (10-5-1, 4-4 SAC) took a 1-0 win over John Brown University (7-8, 3-4 SAC) at Martin Field on Sunday. The game was originally scheduled for Saturday, but was postponed due to rain.
The win was the 10th of the season for the Rams and the 30th for Tyler Powell who is in his third season as head coach.
The Rams were playing shorthanded due to a quirk in the rulebook.
Hector Vargas and
Cody Marlow both served one-game suspensions for accumulating five yellow cards. Vargas sat out Saturday's action, but that incomplete contest did not count. Marlow obtained his fifth yellow during the incomplete contest.
JBU controlled the ball early, taking the game's first four shots. Texas Wesleyan finally took its first shot in the 17th minute. The Rams quickly settled in however, and in the 23rd minute
Marin Kovacevic's shot just eluded the grasp of goalkeeper Pablo Garcia giving the Rams a 1-0 edge.
After both teams took seven shots in the first half, the Golden Eagles created numerous scoring opportunities in the second half. In the period, JBU outshot TWU 11-3, enjoyed a 16-5 foul count, and took four corner kicks. However,
Arturo Sanchez made four saves in the half and eight in the game to preserve his first shutout of the season.
For the game, JBU led 18-10 in shots 8-3 in shots on goal, and 11-0 in corner kicks. Meanwhile the Rams were whistled for 23 fouls and four yellow cards compared to 10 fouls and one card for JBU.
The Rams will return to action on Tuesday, when they travel to Oklahoma City, OK, to take on Oklahoma City University. That game is scheduled for a 7:00 p.m. start.
